3D Home Printing Innovation

In partnership with a contractor, we built the first 3D-printed home in the state of Iowa. However, due to the contractor’s choice of materials, the structure did not meet required strength specifications—and in keeping with our uncompromising standards, we had it removed.

Rather than abandon the concept, we chose to refine our approach. Moving forward, we will continue advancing 3D home printing by working with local builders and developing a custom-built 3D printer—ensuring greater control, innovation, and alignment with community needs.

Globally, 3D-printed housing is gaining momentum in countries like the United States, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, and India as a scalable, cost-effective solution to meet urgent housing needs.

Iowa State University Innovative Work

Iowa State University, through the College of Design, has been aiming to address the shortage of affordable housing in Iowa by exploring a faster, more cost-efficient solution through the use of 3D-printed homes.

These efforts underscore Iowa State’s leadership in applying cutting-edge research to real-world challenges, while thoughtfully addressing regulatory, environmental, and community factors. We look forward to building on this foundation through collaboration—working together to scale affordable housing solutions that are both innovative and deeply rooted in local context.
